Couples seek out a psychologist for a variety of reasons, but most often they do so when they are in distress or dealing with a conflict that seems to have no solution. We take a research-based approach, so couples therapy with one of our licensed psychologists will generally emphasize:
- Creating better communication skills
- Developing an appreciation for your partner
- Understanding how the past may be influencing the present
- Managing stress inside and outside of the relationship
- Moving toward healthy expression of all emotions
Areas Often Addressed
The path and outcomes in couples counseling varies. Depending on the situation and a couple's specific concerns any number of these areas may be addressed:
- Growing to know your partner.
- Understanding yourself and your partner
- Appreciating the role of friendship in the relationship
- How each person in the couple accepts the other
- Learning how to effectively work toward solving problems that can be solved
- Moving away from being stuck by perpetual problems. (Not all problems need to be solved in a couple. In fact, most successful couples have areas of disagreement that never entirely go away)
- Building each partner's dreams and aspirations within the couple
- Creating a shared, meaningful experience as a couple.
Our Approach to Couples Counseling
We approach couples counseling by purposefully integrating several therapeutic styles and schools of thought. Generally, we utilize information and technique established through couples research conducted by The Gottman Institute in Seattle, WA, psychodynamic theories, and experiences as graduate school instructors of listening skills training.
