Founder

Matt Sosnowsky, LICSW is the founder and director of District Psychotherapy.

As a therapist for over a decade, I’ve built a reputation for providing high-quality therapy in the Washington, D.C. area that is both effective and deeply relational. My clients consistently share that they feel heard, supported, and empowered in our work together. I pride myself on developing therapeutic relationships grounded in trust, empathy, and consistency. My style is warm and candid, always balanced with professional care and evidence-based practice. The goal isn’t just a quick fix or a temporary feel-better moment; it’s to foster real, lasting positive change in your life.

I approach therapy with the belief that it should be a collaborative and human experience. I’m not the type of therapist who sits in silence and simply nods; you will find me actively engaged and honest with you throughout our sessions. Colleagues and clients have described my approach as grounded, insightful, and supportive. I aim to create an environment where you feel safe to express yourself, but also challenged to grow. Ultimately, I want you to not only feel better, but to live better—with more clarity, self-understanding, and fulfillment.

What Others Are Saying

Clients describe the experience of working with me as supportive, direct, and grounded. Many people—especially those who are new to therapy or uncertain about the process—note how quickly they feel at ease once we begin talking. I’m proud to say that fellow professionals attest to my clinical acumen and ability to connect with people in an authentic, meaningful way.

This consistent positive feedback shows up not only in conversations and referrals, but also in the written testimonials featured on my website, google reviews and Psychology Today. Across clients and colleagues, I’m known as a thoughtful, effective therapist who helps clients feel comfortable and truly seen.

Education & Professional Background

For more than a decade, I have provided psychotherapy in DC—across agency and private practice settings—helping individuals overcome mental health challenges, navigate life transitions, and discover greater meaning and passion. In addition to my direct clinical work, I also served as the Director of Clinical Intelligence at Twill Health (formerly Happify) from 2019 to 2023. These experiences in mental health tech and traditional therapy have given me a well-rounded, practical lens that I bring into my work with clients.

I began my career at the University of Pennsylvania’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), where I worked with undergraduate and graduate students. That early experience solidified my commitment to helping people through life’s challenges, whether they are dealing with acute mental health issues or simply feeling stuck and seeking direction.

Alongside my hands-on experience, I have a strong educational foundation in psychology:

  • Master of Social Work (MSW) – University of Pennsylvania, 2012.

  • Master of Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) – University of Pennsylvania, 2010. (I was among the first graduating classes of Penn’s pioneering positive psychology program, which focuses on the scientific study of well-being and human flourishing.)

  • Postgraduate Certificate – National Group Psychotherapy Institute, Washington School of Psychiatry.

  • B.S. in Finance – Penn State University, 2002.

My combination of clinical expertise and real-world experience (including a prior career in finance and my work in mental health innovation) allows me to connect with a wide range of clients. I understand the stresses of corporate life and career change just as much as I understand anxiety, depression, or trauma from a clinical perspective.

Media & Recognition

I am honored that my work and insights have been featured in various national media outlets and professional platforms. Over the years, I’ve contributed to or been quoted in publications such as The New York Times, Self, Verywell Mind, and HuffPost—among others. I’ve also shared my expertise as a guest on podcasts discussing mental health and wellness.

In my hometown of Philadelphia, my sister practice was proud to receive Gold awards for Best Mental Health Services in the Philadelphia Inquirer’s “Philly Favorites” for both 2024 and 2025. These recognitions reflect my dedication to making mental health care accessible, relatable, and effective – not just in the therapy room, but in the broader community as well.

Let’s Talk

Finding the right therapist is a deeply personal decision, and I want you to feel completely comfortable before committing to this process. That’s why I offer a free 30-minute video consultation to anyone considering working with me. This informal meeting is a chance for us to talk about what you’re looking for, answer any questions you may have, and get a feel for whether we’re a good fit for each other – no pressure and no obligation. My priority is that you find the support that feels right, even if that ultimately means referring you to a different provider who might better suit your needs.

If you’re ready to take the next step, or if you’d just like to learn a bit more about how I can help, please reach out. I’m here to help you navigate the next chapter of your life with clarity and confidence, and I welcome the opportunity to speak with you.
